Lesson Learned: IKEA Kitchen Ordering

The cabinets are here! They sit in my floorless living room, awaiting installation. Every single part I ordered arrived, with the exception of two critical parts: the frames for both the base corner and the base sink cabinets are not here. A third missing part, the frame for the high pantry cabinet, is on its way, scheduled to arrive Saturday.

DPL Knows All

This is rather disturbing. Apparently the Denver Public Library knows my expiration date! I’m going to live to be 112 years old, at which point, I assume, they will revoke my library card.

Expiration date: 12/31/2092

Fishing | The Reluctant Grownup

I feel the pressure, too. I’m sinking all of my money into a house. (Not into a sinking house, I hope.) Is it a wise investment? Is it even an investment? I don’t know, but I do know that I need floors to walk on and cabinets in which I can store my food.

Marx believed that the first nations to find true communism would be affluent nations such as the United States. Russia was an aberrance, attempted to skip a step, and ultimately failed in a world where capitalism had not yet hit its stride. It is unfortunate that this miscooked “communism” is stigmatized and demonized in our society. I can only hope the growing divide between the rich and poor in this country leads to a better world for tomorrow, but sinking into the cynicism of a prolonged recession affords me little optimism.

Don't Tile This At Home

I’m installing tile floor in my kitchen. After weeks and weeks of removing things from the floors and walls, it’s nice to be putting something back into my house. There is nobody here to help me this week: I’m doing the tile all by myself. The helper in the 1st picture is there for moral support as she lacks opposable thumbs.

2011 Henry Awards Ceremony and Preamble for Critical Musical Discourse

I found a blog just now called He Said/She Said Critiques. It’s a blog by two young theater professionals featuring critiques of Denver-area community and professional productions. They also have local theater information and audition notices.

I’ve read a couple of their reviews and I like their format. However I feel the Denver blogosphere needs the voice of a semiprofessional musician. Every time I see a review of a musical the first thing I look for is a critical analysis of the music. Unfortunately to get good at music you have to study it. For a long time. In fact, for your entire life. I’ve been playing piano for 21+ years now and I’m still not half as good as I want to be. I’ve music directed shows around town and I’ve played in pits. So I’d like to post some blogs/reviews here of the aspects of musical productions to which I am uniquely qualified to speak: the music, sound, direction, and performance. I hold an MFA from USC in film production where I specialized in rerecording mixing and production and postproduction sound. I also have a BA from UNC in Musical Theater. So I am uniquely qualified to offer my unique perspective on how I think musicals should be done at this level.
